Edwin J. Nagle is an American publishing executive, entrepreneur, and retro computing advocate. He is the founder and president of COMPUTE! Publications, Inc. and is best known for relaunching the historic COMPUTE!’s Gazette magazine in July 2025. A longtime Commodore enthusiast, Nagle revived the magazine to serve the broader retro computing community amid a resurgence of interest in vintage technology.
Career
Early interest and inspiration
Nagle’s interest in retro computing stems from his childhood, when his first computer was a Commodore 64 gifted by his brother John. Alongside the machine came a stack of old issues of COMPUTE!’s Gazette. Nagle credits the magazine with inspiring his early interest in programming and technology. After the passing of his brother in 2022, Nagle revisited the C64 and rediscovered the joy and creativity it had once sparked.
Founding COMPUTE! Publications, Inc.
In April 2025, Nagle founded COMPUTE! Publications, Inc. in Cedar Park, Texas. Shortly thereafter, he acquired the rights to the original COMPUTE! and COMPUTE!’s Gazette brands. His goal was to revive the magazine and expand its scope to cover the full spectrum of retro computing platforms, including Commodore, Atari, Apple II, MS-DOS, and others.
Relaunch of COMPUTE!’s Gazette
On July 12, 2025, the first issue of the revived COMPUTE!’s Gazette was released, marking the magazine’s return after a 35-year hiatus. The relaunch coincided with the unveiling of the new Commodore 64 Ultimate—a modernized tribute to the original C64—and was celebrated as a landmark moment in the retro computing community.
The new magazine features:
- Interviews with retro tech leaders, including the new CEO of Commodore International
- Reviews of hardware like the C64 Ultimate
- Revived type-in programs
- Spotlight features on independent developers
- Updated versions of the magazine's original columns
The publication is available in both print and digital formats, with monthly subscription plans and a free tier offering select online content.
COMPUTE!’s Ultimate Challenge
In July 2025, COMPUTE! Publications launched the COMPUTE!’s Ultimate Challenge, a programming competition for developers working on the Commodore 64 Ultimate. The contest invites programmers to submit original games, utilities, or applications tailored to the C64U platform. Prizes include custom editions of the C64U and a publishing deal through the magazine.
Legacy
Nagle’s efforts to revive COMPUTE!’s Gazette and support the Commodore 64 community have been credited with fueling a modern retro computing renaissance. Through the magazine and related media efforts, Nagle is fostering a vibrant ecosystem of creators, collectors, and users dedicated to preserving and extending the life of vintage systems.
