RetroWikipedia Code of Conduct

Introduction

RetroWikipedia exists to document and preserve the rich history of 8-bit and 16-bit computing systems. To achieve this, we aim to create a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative environment where contributors of all backgrounds feel empowered to participate. This Code of Conduct sets the minimum standards of behavior expected from all members of the RetroWikipedia community.

This Code applies to all individuals who interact with or contribute to RetroWikipedia, including editors, moderators, project maintainers, and visitors, across all forums—online and offline, public and private.

We expect all community members to:

  • Support the documentation and preservation of historical computing knowledge.
  • Strive for accuracy, neutrality, and verifiability in content creation.
  • Treat others with respect, regardless of background or experience.
  • Uphold the integrity of the RetroWikipedia platform by avoiding behavior that damages or distorts its content or reputation.

1. Expected Behavior

All RetroWikipedia contributors are responsible for maintaining a welcoming and productive environment. Behavior should reflect values of respect, collegiality, and constructive collaboration.

1.1 Mutual Respect

Contributors are expected to:

  • Practice empathy: Listen actively and consider different perspectives.
  • Assume good faith: Most participants aim to improve the platform. Engage constructively even in disagreement.
  • Use respectful language: Honor individuals’ preferred names, pronouns, and self-identifying terms.
  • Be mindful in person: Respect others’ boundaries, preferences, and cultural norms during real-world meetings or events.

1.2 Civility, Collegiality, and Support

Our community thrives when participants:

  • Communicate courteously and calmly, especially in disagreements.
  • Help newcomers navigate the platform and learn its editing standards.
  • Acknowledge and appreciate others’ contributions.
  • Support fellow contributors, especially when they are being mistreated.

2. Unacceptable Behavior

The following behaviors are incompatible with the values of RetroWikipedia and will not be tolerated:

2.1 Harassment

Includes but is not limited to:

  • Personal attacks, slurs, or ridicule based on identity or belief.
  • Sexual harassment or any form of unwelcome sexual attention.
  • Threats, including implied threats or legal intimidation.
  • Encouraging self-harm, violence, or attacks on others.
  • Doxing: Sharing private or personal information without consent.
  • Persistent negative targeting of a specific individual’s contributions.
  • Trolling or intentionally provoking conflict.

2.2 Abuse of Power or Influence

This includes:

  • Misuse of administrative or editorial authority to silence or intimidate others.
  • Leveraging community reputation to attack, manipulate, or coerce.
  • Gaslighting or psychological manipulation to undermine others’ confidence or participation.

2.3 Vandalism and Content Abuse

All contributors must uphold RetroWikipedia’s mission to document history faithfully. The following are considered violations:

  • Repeatedly removing or altering content without reason or discussion.
  • Falsifying or misrepresenting historical facts or sources.
  • Introducing hate speech, discriminatory language, or offensive symbols.
  • Using categories or metadata in ways intended to marginalize or ridicule.

3. Enforcement

Violations of this Code may result in sanctions, including warnings, editing restrictions, temporary suspensions, or bans. Enforcement may be carried out by moderators or administrators in accordance with established RetroWikipedia governance policies.

4. Revisions and Updates

This Code of Conduct is a living document. It will be reviewed and revised as needed to reflect the evolving needs of the RetroWikipedia community and to ensure alignment with its core mission of historical preservation and inclusivity.
